Speaking English towards Vietnamese Students.

In Vietnam, besides our mother tongue language which is Vietnamese, English is the most popular foreign language that mostly people choose to learn. The less popular then comes Chinese, French and Japanese. In primary school, students are taught to learn English by grammar and vocabulary, focus on writing and reading skill only. Listening skill and speaking skill are not included in the final exam which could be known as "since it didn't come with the finals, we don't have to pay much attention to it", said the teachers.

So, just a cup of milk tea while thinking about others' point of view.
English majored students in Hutech (Ho Chi Minh University of Technology) hardly speak English fluently. English professors in Technical Training University of Ho Chi Minh City find it hard to communicate with foreigners. Teachers told us to be confident, to speak English to make it a habit. In high school, we were hardly encouraged to open our mouths and speak. In college, they blamed high schools not to teach us how to speak. A lot of students can't survive college. They have to find some Language School to make up their skills. In those school, they were one again taught to speak English but in a different way. They were encouraged to speak whatever they can think of. They were taught not to focus too much on the grammar in order to speak as fluently as possible. That method was at first, a big success. There was only one problem.

Not everyone stays at the end of the course. Going to Language Schools/Centers was not a force. They don't have to learn to get good grades. They learn to know. That's the weakest point. When they think that they learn enough, they'll stop. They come back to college, pass some finals, graduate and speak a language without paying any attention to the grammar, the punctuation, even the pronunciation. Yes, it's the truth.

Since they can speak English, the words can come out of their mouths, they think that they don't need to speak correctly, just fluently is enough.

In my opinion, I don't think it's right. It was wrong. Really really wrong. Speaking fluently is just what you should have learned when you were in high school. In college, you're a student with major. You're about to professional what you'll learn. In my class, there are some people who can speak English fluently. But only two or three of them can speak correctly. By using "correctly", I mean they don't make mistakes in grammar only. Intonation? No, it doesn't come along. Then why do we have intonation?

Lately, there's been too many arguments, too many online wars. This is just a few words that I want to say... I can't keep all these thoughts in my head any longer.

Anyway, this is just a personal blog where a person express herself.
Thank you for taking your time reading this. I really appreciate!
