A Drawing Lesson

This is a drawing lesson, not a drawing tutorial. So what you might expect might not be found in this post. :)

I'm a friend of an inspired illustrator whom is also my best friend. I've known +Linh Ichigo since we were in 5th grade. We grew up together, but on separated paths. We were both into arts. Ichigo falls in love with illustration/watercolours/painting and basically, everything involves drawing. On the other hand, I fall for novels, stories & comics. I started writing my first story when I was in secondary school and Ichigo brought my story into pictures. She illustrated my works, brought them to pictures, to motions. Ever since, we become best friends.

We have dreams. We choose to follow ours in different ways. Ichigo went to college of Financial and Banking. I went to college of Technology, English Major. Our dreams, however, were not being left behind. It became our hobbies. I write plots, stories, even poems and songs. Ichigo draws cards, bookmarks and pictures. While I choose to stay quiet and write my own masterpieces, Ichigo shares her artworks on social media such as Facebook and Instagram.

As a matter of fact, Ichigo often receives comments such as "What watercolours did you use?" "How can you colour that?" "Did you take any class in drawing?". I've been reading all these comments for a long time. Ichigo replies all these comments with respects. It was not a problem until we both started to see many comments like "I used the same watercolours of yours, why didn't my work look as great as yours?".

I laughed so hard at first because I thought these people were joking. But as time goes by, it gets serious. Those people actually had no idea about the differences between their abilities and Ichigo's. They keep blaming her for her recommendations of choosing the brand, the place to buy supplies. For the worst, there was someone who asked Ichigo whether she could teach drawing. Ichigo told that person to search for some books at any bookstore, there are many great books in teaching arts and if that person was unable to follow the books, she would help. Then, she received the next question asking her what the exact book to be looking for...

By having met so many people like that, I'm aware that they might not know the simple fact of drawing. It doesn't matter what tools you have, the artwork was not created from tools. Your artworks must be created by you. No matter how expensive your tools could be, even the most expensive pack of watercolours or the finest brushes can't create a masterpiece themselves. It is said that by having a DSLR Camera, it wouldn't make you a photographer. It's true. I've been there. I've learned my lesson. I hope you would soon learn yours. It's never too late to learn this.

Having a pack of colour tubes and a brush doesn't make you a painter.

To all the people who keep wondering...
Sincerely,
Linh Daikon.

In case, you might ask:
1. Those tubes was at $1.5. I bought this pack at the Kid's Corner in the supermarket. The no.4 brush came included.
2. The sketch book was at $1.5. I bought this at Lộc Art Supplies - across the university of Economy in Saigon.
3. The photo was taken by Linh Daikon, using Lumia 620 camera. Retouched by Adobe Photoshop Light Room 5.4 (full-version).
